Faculty Position in AMO/CMMP
| . |
The Department of Physics, Central Michigan University invites applications for a tenure-track position in experimental AMO/condensed matter/materials physics (CMMP) at the Assistant Professor level, beginning 19 August 2002.
CMU is a state-supported university with a current on-campus enrollment of 19,122 students. Designated a Doctoral Research Intensive institution by the Carnegie Foundation, CMU is a growing, student-focused university that strives for excellence in both teaching and research. The physics department has active experimental groups in laser spectroscopy, glassy thin-films and rheology as well as a strong computational CMMP group that takes advantage of a new massively parallel cluster of workstations housed within the department. We seek to add to these strengths.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field with a research specialization in experimental AMO/CMMP. Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred. Applicants with a background in optical techniques for materials fabrication, characterization and/or testing are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent, active experimental research program on campus that merits external funding and involves undergraduate and M.S. students. Candidates should be committed to excellence in teaching and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate is expected to teach both general and service courses, as well as courses for physics majors and graduate students. Experience in teaching physics at the instructor level is very desirable. Further information about the department/university is available at www.phy.cmich.edu.
Applicants should submit a letter of application that includes a description of their research experience and plans, a discussion of their teaching experience and preferences, and a curriculum vita with names and addresses (including E-mail) of 3 references, at least one of whom can comment on the applicant's teaching ability, to:
Prof. Stanley Hirschi, Search Committee
